WEEK 5: PASTRY WEEK
Hold onto those soggy bottoms! It's Pastry Week. The Signature saw two Peter Pats on the Back. Ruth received one for her Ruthless Rugelach Hand Pies and Kate B dazzled with her boozy Sparkling Cider Hand Pie. Ali and Amelia and Kate H had competing versions of a Full English Hand Pie though none of them included beans. Crystelle was Form over Function with her Sparkly Pasties Pasty. Almost every baker did quite well in the Signature but Mary struggled with her flavor combinations and though Victoria had been intrigued by the idea of an Apple, Banana Cream, and Onion Hand Pie, the judges were not overly impressed with the execution.
Victoria set this week's Technical of Vegan Spinach Pot Pie with Olive Oil Crust, which Ben, Holly, and Pat insisted on calling Popeye the Pot Pie. All the bakers struggled with the crust but Kate B took top honors for the most flavorful filling. Ruth was deemed to have done the best job with the Olive Oil Crust. Mary was disqualified for adding lard to her pastry.
The Showstoppers featured a stunning array of Piecakens. Brendan's Blackened Forest Piecaken was supposed to be a nod to Climate Change but ended up a little bit of a forest fire. Ruth's Summer Stone Fruits Piecaken caused Simon to actually swoon and Kate B's Triple Tropical really took the Piecaken. Mary's pastry disappeared from her fridge so she forged on with filled cakes which rather defeated the purpose.
In an unprecedented turn, the judges could not reach consensus so two Star Bakers were chosen this week with the caveat that a future week may not involve any Star Bakers.
Dana was run off her feet this week as kitchen utensil kept going missing. Tom found the bakes this week especially easy to draw which left him with a surprising amount of downtime to kick a football about. Until it bounced into the tent and under Luis' feet. Terry automated a number of cameras, which was fortuitous as the whole tenor of tent mishaps changed shortly after filming completed and Opal was found in outside with a knife in her back, a cake skewer in her eye and floury handprints on her neck. It is hoped that one of the automated cameras may have recorded what happened to Opal. Unfortunately the memory cards all seem to have gone missing.\
